Why the First 90 Days With a New Client Matter More Than You Think

The first 90 days set the type of relationship you're going to have. Treat onboarding as a realignment, not a kickoff, and you move from supplier to partner.

The first 90 days of any new client relationship are critical. It's where trust is built, where expectations are set and where the type of relationship you're going to have really starts to take shape.

But get this wrong and that's when buyer's remorse can kick in.

Which is why onboarding matters far more than most agencies treat it, and I don't mean a kickoff that just runs through timelines and deliverables.

I mean taking the time to realign.

Going back to the strategic objectives. Sense-checking the success metrics. Making sure nothing has shifted since the sales process, because it often has.

Establish your ways of working

It's also the moment to establish how the relationship runs day to day:

  • How you communicate
  • How information is shared
  • Who is responsible for what
  • Who signs things off
  • What good looks like on both sides

And don't forget the practical stuff that can cause friction later if it's not sorted upfront, access to platforms, data governance, AI policies.

Because without this level of rigour, things start to drift, expectations get misaligned, communication breaks down and frustration builds. That's when buyer's remorse creeps in.

When you get this right

The client understands how the relationship works. They know what's expected of them. They start to see value early. And importantly, they start to trust you.

Not just to deliver the work… but to lead it.

Which is ultimately what moves you from supplier to partner.

Something to think about this week

When a new client signs… are you just kicking things off?

Or are you intentionally using those first 90 days to set the relationship up properly?

Because that window doesn't just shape the start. It shapes everything that follows.
