The Gap Between What Clients Need and What Agencies Deliver
700 client interviews. A few uncomfortable truths. Clients are stretched thinner than ever, and quietly expecting more from their agencies at the same time.
If you've felt like clients are harder to retain right now, you're not imagining it.
They're under more pressure than they've been in years. Smaller teams, tighter budgets, faster decisions, more scrutiny on every pound spent.
And in amongst all that, they're quietly expecting more from their agencies at the exact same time.
The newly released What Clients Think 2026 report (based on 700 interviews) puts some real numbers behind what many of us have been sensing for a while.
First, clients are stretched thin
- 80% say their teams have shrunk in the last two years.
- 77% say they're having to pivot faster than ever.
So when a client seems reactive, slow to respond, or constantly changing direction, that's not poor client behaviour. That's pressure.
The agencies that win and keep clients aren't just delivering work. They're taking the strain off them.
Second, expectations are going up, not down
- 67% of clients say they'll need more support from agencies over the next 1-2 years.
This doesn't mean they want more output. They want:
- More strategic thinking
- More proactivity
- More help navigating internal politics
- More support justifying budgets (this is a big one!)
In other words, they want a partner, not a supplier.
Third, clients want you to step up and push back
- 64% say their agency could be more assertive.
That line stuck with me. Because how often do we default to being "easy to work with"? Saying yes, "making the client happy," avoiding friction, holding back on a stronger point of view so as not to rock the boat.
From the client's perspective, that's not helpful. It's passive and unremarkable.
What they actually want is someone who will:
- Challenge them
- Hold them to deadlines
- Have a clear opinion
- Argue the case when it matters
That's where trust is built.
Finally, clients don't have time
Marketing Directors spend, on average, just 8% of their time interacting with agencies.
Which means every interaction must count. It must bring true value, not a list of tasks to tick off, but alignment to the business.
What this means in practice
It's not about adding more layers, more process, or more noise. It's about a shift in how you show up:
- Less reactive delivery, more proactive thinking
- Less "just tell us what you need", more "here's what we recommend"
- Less being liked, more being respected
Because the agencies that grow right now won't be the ones doing more work. They'll be the ones doing more thinking, and making their clients' lives easier in the process.
Ask yourself:
Where are we still behaving like a supplier, when our clients need us to be a partner?
That's usually where the biggest growth opportunity is hiding.
